A military electro-optical infrared (EO/IR) system is a sensor technology used for detection, tracking, and imaging across multiple light spectrums. It combines visible light imaging with infrared sensing to provide enhanced situational awareness in both day and night conditions. These systems are commonly integrated into ground vehicles, aircraft, naval platforms, and fixed installations.

The electro-optical component captures high-resolution visual imagery, while the infrared component detects heat signatures. By combining both data streams, the system can identify objects that may be obscured by darkness, smoke, or camouflage. This dual capability improves target recognition and environmental assessment.

Modern EO/IR systems often include stabilized gimbals that allow the sensor to remain focused on a target despite movement from the platform. Advanced image processing software enhances clarity, filters noise, and supports automated tracking functions. Some systems also incorporate laser rangefinding and target designation features.
